A Word to the Wise

Dr. Walter Olsen

Is it possible for an individual to sin so much that God cannot save Him? Sometimes people reason that God only saves the "good" sinners. However, the Bible is clear that one’s sin does not limit the grace and ability of God to save one’s soul. We need to heed what God Himself says about the relationship of law and grace. "Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound" (Rom. 5:20). Indeed, the grace of God is greater than our sins! If this were not true, no one could be saved because our sins, no matter who we are or how long we have lived, are great beyond our comprehension. Compared to a perfectly holy God, we are all desperately wicked sinners. However, many people have a great problem reckoning the depth and seriousness of their sins. Thus they reason they can be saved by doing some good works or joining a religion. The truth is, until we reckon our sins and that Jesus died to forgive us of our sins, there is no salvation. Thankfully, though, the Lord can save all who come to Him in faith regardless of the depth of their sins!
