A Word to the Wise

Dr. Walter Olsen

Can any man make himself pure in the sight of God?

No, though many assume they can. If one rejects the truth of God’s word, the Bible, he will seek his own path of justification if he has any concern about his standing before God. The question is, "Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?" (Prov. 20:9). The only ones who can say they have made their hearts clean are the ones who have personally come to the Lord Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins. Thankfully, Jesus Christ died on the cross that we might be forgiven and be pure in His sight, not by our own good works, but by His atoning death and consequent resurrection. Thus, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). No, man cannot make himself pure before God, but Jesus Christ made it possible for all who believe to indeed be pure before Him! Such is the grace and mercy of God.
