A Word to the Wise

Does the Christian have any assurance of his salvation?

Thankfully, yes. The Apostle Paul made it clear when he said, "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest [down payment] of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory" (Eph. 1:13-14). When one becomes a Christian by believing the gospel message, he is sealed with the Holy Spirit. That is, the Holy Spirit comes to live within him giving him the assurance of his salvation. Paul also said, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God" (Rom. 8:16). This witness of the Spirit comes only as one believes and trusts Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of his sins. It cannot come by any other means because it is a work of God alone. No man can do the work only God Himself can do. To seek to do so is to be ultimately deceived. It is to the praise of God that the believer can have the assurance of his salvation! 12/15/14, Dr. Walter Olsen
