A Word to the Wise

Dr. Walter Olsen

Do Christians have any encouragement for living in an obviously sinful world?

Yes! Jesus, in praying to His Father for believers said, "I have given them Thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world" (Jn. 17:14). The point is, believers are not a part of the world system which is under the control of the god of this world, that is, Satan. Believers have a new identity in Christ and a new life, even that of the Lord Himself. Still, believers must live in this world until they are called home to heaven. Until then, we have a glorious promise from the Lord. The Apostle Paul, in speaking of Jesus Christ said, "Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world [age], according to the will of God and our Father" (Gal. 1:4). So yes, believers must live for now in the evil age about them, but yet they are delivered from its control and dominion! They now have freedom and new life in Christ. One day they will be delivered forever from the presence of sin. The one whose hope is Christ has the greatest of reasons for encouragement!
